Setting
Tales of the Abyss takes place on the fictional planet of Auldrant, which is further divided into two major countries: the Kingdom of Kimlasca-Lanvaldear, and the Malkuth Empire. A third power is the Order of Lorelei, a religious authority that follows a prophecy known as the Score, and which acts as a neutral party and mediator. Some small independent enclaves also exist, but most of the world is controlled by one of these three factions.
One important feature of Auldrant is the existence of fonons, energy particles that come in seven different types and which exist within all matter on the planet. Individuals with affinity towards certain types of fonons can manipulate them using artes to create various effects, such as fiery explosions or healing spells; fonons can also be controlled through the use of fon machines. The effects of fonic artes and fonon manipulation often strongly resemble magic, but they are an integral part of science and technological innovation on Auldrant.
The Kingdom of Kimlasca-Lanvaldear
Kimlasca-Lanvaldear, also known as simply Kimlasca, is the homeland of our main character, Luke, and where we start the game. Its capital is Baticul, and Luke's uncle, Ingobert VI, is the king. It's a highly religious nation, with a strong loyalty to the Score and a close relationship with the Order of Lorelei.
The Malkuth Empire
The Malkuth Empire controls most of the northern part of Auldrant, with its capital city, Grand Chokmah, itself sitting near the northernmost part of the Empire. Historically, Malkuth and Kimlasca have often been at odds, but the current Emperor, Peony Upala Malkuth IX, is less interested in tradition, and more interested in peace and stability.
The Order of Lorelei
The Order of Lorelei is the major religious institution of Auldrant, and is headquartered in Daath, an autonomous region ruled by the church. The Order follows the Score, a prophecy created 2000 years ago, which is meant to lead the people of Auldrant to an era of prosperity. Its main focus is ensuring this prophecy comes to pass by preaching the Score to both individuals and governments, though they are also involved in various other endeavours, including conflict mediation and charity work.
